My primary area of research investigates the ways in which cognitive factors, learning conditions, instruction, and interactions among them, shape and support linguistic development, especially of morphosyntax (e.g., tense, aspect, mood). Alongside investigations of how variations in input, interaction, and usage shape linguistic development, I have long-standing interests in crosslinguistic influence and instruction, including how instruction can address the negative effects of crosslinguistic influence. I also have major interests in replication research and research methods, shaped by my interests in research design and the use/quality of evidence in theory development. In addition to carrying out replications and developing guidance/training in their design, execution, and interpretation, I have conducted metascience research to better understand current practices in the field as well as why replications appear infrequent. Some of my recent books include Usage in second language acquisition. Critical reflections and future directions (2024, Routledge), Crosslinguistic influence and second language learning (2022, Routledge), and Doing replication research in applied linguistics (2019, Routledge). In 2020, I received the ACTFL-NFMLTA/MLJ Paul Pimsleur Award for Research in Foreign Language Education and, in 2024, the Albert Valdman Award for Outstanding Publication.
